What Chartered Status Actually Tells You About a Firm
Anyone can call themselves an accountant in Australia. Two things are regulated: registration as a tax agent with the Tax Practitioners Board, which is what allows a firm to prepare and lodge returns for a fee, and membership of a professional body. CA ANZ, CPA Australia and the IPA are the three main bodies, and each sets its own entry and ongoing requirements.
Chartered status through CA ANZ means the member has completed an accredited degree, the CA Program and a period of supervised practical experience, and remains subject to continuing professional development and a disciplinary regime. That is a fact you can check rather than a claim you have to take on trust. The register is public and it takes about a minute.
Where it matters most is complexity. Group structures, trusts, SMSF audits, business valuations and pre-sale planning are the areas where technical depth shows up in the work. Credentials are not the whole answer, though. A chartered firm can still be a firm you only hear from at tax time. Once you have confirmed the qualification, the more useful questions are about how the relationship works: how often will we meet, what is on the agenda, who does the work, and how quickly does someone get back to you.
Proximity is worth weighing too. Firms are spread across both ends of the Coast, and if you want regular in person planning meetings rather than an annual file handover, being able to get to your accountant’s office matters more than it does for a once a year return.
