Most accountants only contact you at tax time because their service is built around compliance: preparing and lodging your return once a year. That model does the legal minimum but leaves out the planning and advice that actually help a business move forward. If you want more than an annual lodgement, you usually need an accountant who offers ongoing advisory services rather than a once-a-year relationship.
Compliance-Only Versus an Ongoing Relationship
The compliance model is transactional by design. The work is preparing and lodging a return, it is priced around that annual job, and the contact follows the same yearly rhythm. There is nothing wrong with it for a simple situation, but it is built to meet your obligations, not to improve your position.
What that model leaves out is the valuable part. Proactive tax planning before year-end, regular review of your numbers, early warning when something looks off, and advice at the decision points that matter all happen between tax returns, not during them. If your accountant is silent for eleven months, none of that is taking place.
There is a practical reason this is so common. Compliance-only service is cheaper to deliver and easier to run at scale, so many traditional firms are set up that way. It is not a sign your accountant is incompetent. It is a sign that the service was never designed to do more than lodge.
The alternative is an advisory relationship with regular contact, often a monthly or quarterly planning conversation, depending on the business. To be fair, if your needs are genuinely simple, annual contact may be all you require. The mismatch shows up when the business has grown, and the service has not grown with it. If that sounds like you, our business advisory on the Central Coast explains what ongoing support looks like.
