Choose an accountant based on four things: credentials for your level of complexity, experience with businesses like yours, a working relationship that includes year-round planning (not just at tax time), and a track record of quick responses. Price and convenience matter, but they shouldn’t decide it. The right accountant is the one who will still suit your business as it grows.
What to Look For, and What to Ask
Start with credentials. Chartered Accountants (CA ANZ) and CPAs belong to professional bodies with education and ongoing training requirements, while a registered tax agent is licensed to prepare and lodge tax returns. For an established business with company or trust structures, payroll and planning needs, the higher qualification usually earns its place.
Next, industry knowledge. Some businesses carry their own compliance weight: trust accounting for law firms, service entity structures for dental practices, progress claims for builders. An accountant who already understands those mechanics saves you from paying for them to learn on your file.
Then ask how the relationship works. How often will you meet? Who will you deal with? Will they contact you before 30 June to talk about tax planning, or only after it to prepare the return? A good answer is specific, naming the cadence and the person, rather than general promises of “tailored service.”
Finally, check how they treat their existing clients. Reviews that mention people by name, prompt replies and years-long relationships tell you more than a list of services. One of our clients described the relationship as meeting “with Kylie every month for business and financial planning”, which is the kind of detail worth looking for.
