Ask five things: who will actually handle my work, how often will we meet and talk, how quickly do you respond, what experience do you have with businesses like mine, and how does switching over to you work. The answers tell you whether you are hiring a relationship or just a lodgement service. Listen for specific answers with names, timeframes and process steps, not general promises.
What a Good Answer Sounds Like
“Who will I actually deal with?” In some firms you meet a partner once and then never see them again. A good answer names the person who will handle your file day to day, and whether that stays the same year after year. Continuity matters, because someone who already knows your business gives faster and better advice.
“How often will we talk, and about what?” This is the question that separates compliance from advice. If the answer centres on your tax return, expect to hear from them once a year. A stronger answer describes a regular rhythm of planning conversations covering cash flow, structure and where the business is heading.
“How quickly do you get back to clients?” Every firm says they are responsive. Ask what a normal turnaround looks like, and check their reviews to see whether clients mention it. Our own clients describe it as “always get back to me as soon as possible”, which is the kind of evidence worth looking for.
“Have you worked with businesses like mine?” Industries such as law, dental, real estate and construction carry their own rules, from trust accounts to progress claims. An accountant who already understands them won’t be learning on your file.
“What happens when I switch?” A good firm handles the handover for you, including contacting your current accountant and transferring your records. If the answer is vague, the transition probably will be too.
